Hilo Benioff Medical Center Progressive Care Unit

Our Mission

Our Progressive Care Unit (PCU) is a 33-bed, inpatient nursing unit; providing comprehensive intermediate care, for adult patients ages 18 years and greater. Our patients are stable enough to be safely cared for outside the intensive care unit, but require significantly more skilled nursing care and medical surveillance than can be provided on a medical or surgical unit.

PCU provides 24-hour, continuous heart monitoring for a broad spectrum of patients suffering from acute and chronic illnesses. Our primary focus is on conditions of the heart and brain, and we work closely with our partners in Hilo Medical Center’s Cardiology Clinic and Heart Attack & Stroke Program. Our PCU is a nationally recognized Beacon unit, awarded for its exemplary efforts to successfully improve patient outcomes through evidence-based practices.

What to Expect

The Progressive Care Nursing staff will greet you at the bedside when you arrive on the unit. You will be assigned to a specific Registered Nurse (RN) and a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA). Your RN/CNA will immediately help you to get settled in your room and begin by introducing themselves and serving your needs. The staff will begin by admitting you to the hospital.  During this time, you will take part by answering important questions concerning your condition.  It does take some time to complete, but it is vital to making sure we have the most current and pertinent information necessary to provide the best care that we can for you.  After this, the RN/CNA will provide care based on your Physician ordered treatment plan. Remember, you (the patient) are an important member of the healthcare team.  Please feel free to ask questions and actively participate in your medical care.  We encourage it.

Bedside Shift Report: Our nurses will do their nursing report at your bedside to ensure that you are included in your plan of care.

Leader Rounding: During your time on our unit, a leader will round on you each day to ensure that exceptional care is being provided.

Hourly Rounding: Our staff will provide hourly rounding while you are on our unit. During this rounding, we will focus on pain control, position, getting you to the bathroom, and making sure that your personal possessions are within reach.

Expect that you will be on telemetry (heart monitor) at all times (sometimes even for a bath).  Sometimes you might be connected to a monitor at the bedside as well.   You will have frequent vital signs and assessments (every 2-4 hours) depending on your status even throughout the night.  While we strive to provide you with a restful environment, your condition necessitates these frequent assessments.  Expect most of your nurses to be with you for 12 hours to provide continuity of care.   Bedside shift reports occur at change of shift and this allows the nurses to provide accurate information to each other about YOU.  You are an important part of your care team so please actively participate.  If you would like to opt out, you may do so but we highly encourage you to allow a shift change report at your bedside.  We have a limited number of private rooms reserved for those with a medical requirement for a private room so we are unable to accommodate special requests for private rooms but we will provide you with ear plugs, TV watching headphones and other means to make your stay in a semi-private room as comfortable as possible.
